About Kelly Johnson-Merrell
Kelly Johnson-Merrell is the Founder and Principal Project Manager of her company, with over 20 years of experience in IT project management. She is PMP (Project Management Certified), CSM (Certified Scrum Master), and ITILv4 certified. Kelly’s career began with a desire to improve people’s quality of life through technology. However, she soon realized that many IT projects lacked empathy, resulting in disjointed outcomes. Kelly transitioned into project management to incorporate empathy and better human-centered outcomes in these projects.

A Career Built on Compassion and Efficiency
Kelly’s pivotal moment came while working at the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). She identified processes that could be improved, which ultimately led to faster migration speeds and more reliable project outcomes. Her proactive approach led to her taking a leadership role in overseeing the project, further solidifying her passion for project management.
“I realized how much influence small changes can make,” Kelly reflects, emphasizing the profound impact of process improvement on project success.
Empowering Others to Succeed
Kelly’s joy comes from helping others discover and realize their passions. She especially enjoys working with women and minorities, providing the encouragement they need to achieve their dreams. “When others can see that success is possible, it inspires them to push forward with renewed energy,” she shares.
The Importance of Mentorship and Growth
Mentorship has played a crucial role in Kelly’s journey. “Having people around who believe in your potential and offer guidance has helped me become the person I am today,” Kelly says.
She also emphasizes continuous learning as essential for both personal and professional growth. “I stay curious and open to new knowledge. This mindset has helped me expand my expertise.”
Facing and Overcoming Hard Truths
Kelly also learned the importance of “the great shifting.” Accepting that not everyone will join you on your journey can be painful, but it’s necessary for growth. “Letting go of relationships that no longer align with your path is essential,” she explains.
Work-Life Balance and Legacy
Despite a demanding career, Kelly finds time for her hobbies. She describes herself as “geek chic,” with interests such as gardening, cooking, gaming, and anime. These activities help her maintain balance and well-being.
Looking to the future, Kelly aims to build businesses that support small enterprises and empower women-owned businesses. “Success is about empowering others, growing continuously, and staying open to learning,” she says.
